Hanford's living environment, dynamic and mobile, regularly carries contamination beyond controlled territory, necessitating a multi-million dollar biological vector control program in the service of radioactive pest management.ĭuring her 23 years at Hanford, Tracy has often been assigned vector control duty. However, the scale and ubiquity of Hanford's toxicity disrupt the rigid boundaries that HPTs so faithfully enforce. Workers, for example, must be “released” by an HPT before they can leave radioactive space, shedding protective gear like toxic skin in preparation for their return to the “uncontaminated” world. ![]() At Hanford, Health Physics Technicians are charged with containing nuclear materials, ensuring that contamination does not move beyond “controlled” 2 areas of the site. They survey land, equipment, and people for elevated levels of radioactivity, patrolling the official boundary between safe and unsafe exposure. Department of Energy (DOE), Hanford is currently engaged in the largest and most expensive environmental remediation project in human history-struggling to contain the material byproducts of weapons manufacture.Īlso known as Radiological Control Technicians, HPTs like Tracy are the border guards of nuclear industry. Once the heart of American plutonium production, Hanford is now the nation's most contaminated nuclear site, laced with more than 450 billion gallons of liquid nuclear waste. Tracy is a Health Physics Technician (HPT) at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, a 586 square mile nuclear weapons complex in southeastern Washington State. I imagine this scene as I sit at Tracy's kitchen table, sipping tea and listening to her tell stories about biological vector control. With a whoop, she reaches for the bag and calls it in. Finally, beneath a rusting three legged chair she finds it: a garbage bag containing rotten food and elevated levels of Strontium 90-the signature of radioactive fruit flies. She checks the radiation count-normal-and wishes she could plug her nose. She steps over a plastic bag that has burst in the middle, spewing chicken bones, oily napkins, and a partially melted spatula. Geiger counter in hand, she moves carefully between rolling hills of trash, feeling the unstable squish of each step on decaying ground. Tracy stands on a mound of steaming garbage at the city landfill and tries to get used to the smell. Department of Energy cannot: to solve Hanford's nuclear waste problem. I argue that in its doubling, nature is being recruited to do what the U.S. Finally, by examining the dual production of nature as both untouched wilderness and biological vector, I consider how this slippage between pure and polluted has been employed in the service of nuclear industry. Looking specifically at one of the site's most notorious offenders (the fruit fly), I discuss how vector control uses instances of nuclear trespass to articulate the boundary between contaminated and uncontaminated. Next, I consider how Hanford's biological vector control program addresses the spread of radioactive flora and fauna. Beginning with the Hanford Reach National Monument, I examine how this space is framed as both pristine habitat and waste frontier. How can these environments simultaneously embody ruin and redemption, and what work does this constitutive contradiction do? In this article, I explore the slippery subjectivities of nuclear waste and nature at Washington State's Hanford Nuclear Reservation. However, these areas are also home to contaminated biota that migrate beyond refuge boundaries, inspiring biological vector control campaigns that frame nuclear nature as a threat that must be contained. In recent years, many of these landscapes have been re-classified as national wildlife refuges in an attempt to transform the nation's atomic sacrifice zones into spaces of environmental salvation. Nuclear weapons production has created a unique geography of irradiated open space in the United States. ![]() The combat appears innovative at first, but it is actually heavily weighed upon by its unbelievable leniency which only serves to make battles a chore. Some weirdly missable achievements were added in a game without a chapter select and clearly meant to be played through once. Some may find there to be too much dialogue, and granted there's a ton around every corner, but I actually quite enjoyed it - but to be clear, it would've been better to include more passive storytelling or worldbuilding and also more in-depth character involvement. Each area is a place to temporarily "live" in until the next, and that's one of the best ways to handle this kind of design. On that note though, each area was well-designed insofar as you stay in the area until you're finished, so it's impossible to accidentally miss side quests and such. Seriously great character and art design, and as another reviewer said, perhaps let down by uniformly drab townscapes. CONELRAD established two civil defense frequencies, 6 kilohertz. To counteract the potential for a Russian air attack on North America the US Government enacted the CONELRAD program, which stood for CONtrol of ELectromagnetic RADiation. CD stood for Civil Defense and was taken very seriously in the 50’s and 60’s due to the communist “red scare.” ![]() These are CD marks, which appeared on all radios manufactured or sold in the U.S. One easy way to date a transistor radio to this period is to look for small triangles or circles between the 6 & 7 and the 12 & 16 on the dial. Generally, the most collectable and historic transistor radios are those made in Japan from 1956 to 1963 and America from 1955-60. There are a few exceptions which I will talk about shortly. What we’ve realized over the years is that these radios are not as rare or scarce as once thought. They predate eBay and the quoted prices are often higher than present day values. Most of the price guides on the market were released well over ten years ago during the first “wave” of transistor radio collecting. I suggest spending some time on the internet or scanning the pages of the few transistor radio price guides to research makes and models. Have fun and buy radios that appeal to your personal tastes. Sure, you’ll want some key radios but make sure you collect what you like. Although the main focus of this article is to broaden your knowledge base, make sure you don’t just collect for investment or get caught up in only possessing what are considered “must haves”. By your fourth radio you will be considered a “collector” and will be hooked! There will be no turning back from the appeal of these mid-century, technical and artistic marvels.īefore spending too much money I recommend you take some time, do your homework and educate yourself. Well, be warned! If you buy one transistor radio it will most likely grow to two, then three. Perhaps you recently saw a picture of a cool looking pocket radio from the early 1960’s and were reminded of your carefree, youthful days? Maybe it was the pastel colors or atomic aged designs that caught your eye? Or the chrome highlights that attracted your attention? Nonetheless, you find yourself actively seeking them out at the local flea market or surfing eBay for a good deal. But the fact that he hasn't lost ground for five years and isn't in a wheelchair as he approaches adolescence defies every expectation for a Duchenne's kid. Now 12-and-a-half, Conner, who improved for a while after his gene therapy treatment, struggles again to climb a flight of stairs. The drugs don't directly affect the underlying cause of the disease. Eventually, muscle cells with the corrected gene may get crowded out and replaced by uncorrected ones.īut everyone agrees that current treatment needs improving. In Conner's case, the disease was simply genetic bad luck. But boys have only one X, so they have no backup. Few made it to 25.Įight years ago, when Conner, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, was diagnosed there were just five drugs under development. The passages are thus arranged sequentially to illustrate the historical flow of religious influence from the Nityā cult to that of Tripurasundarī, who is still actively worshiped today in the popular Śrīvidyā tradition. ![]() The latter three passages are from the Vāmakeśvarīmata, a Tantra of slightly later origin that expands the goddess’s retinue and links her to the famous diagram of nine interlocking triangles, called the Śrīcakra. The passage from the Ciñciṇīmatasārasamuccaya serves as a midpoint that elaborates on the nature and power of Kāmeśvarī. The frequent ellipses (.) in the first passage flag places where the text is damaged and unreadable. This important early Tantra has barely reached the present, for it survives in a single damaged palm-leaf manuscript from Nepal. The first two pieces are from the Nityākaula, a previously untranslated Tantra predating the eleventh century and the sole surviving representative of the Nityā cult, as described in the essay. They are all about vivid description, characteristics of the practitioner, and praise for the goddess’s power. These six short passages translated from the Sanskrit depart from the narrative format and instead present Tantric-guided visualizations and hymns of praise to the so-called goddess of desire, Kāmeśvarī. Its green forests and high mountains host some of the most biodiverse wilderness in India, with over 750 species of birds and hundreds of mammals, including snow leopards, red pandas, and gibbon apes. This area borders Tibet, Myanmar, and Bhutan and is home to numerous tribal communities speaking dozens of languages and hundreds of dialects. Of the six short passages, the third alone mentions a place called the “Garlanded” (Mālinī) Mountain and a ravine or cave named Kokila, which may refer to sites in the far northeast of India, in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, such as the ruined temple site called Malini- than in the Siang Hills. The Tantras selected here give few clues about geographical locations. This paper investigates the interplay between these two levels through a study of the correlation of Sarvāmnāya theology, ritual, and yogic practice to the variety of cultural productions in Nepal-including architecture, paintings, music, and public ritual-which function as signs of the king’s right to abide at the center of Nepāla-Maṇḍala. On a secondary and exoteric level, Devī functions as a sign of the politico-military power of Nepalese kings. Employed on a primary and esoteric level within this system, Devī, the goddess, signifies that singular consciousness-power (cit-śakti) that manifests creation through the flashing forth of her phonemic self (mātṛkātmaka) into a vibrant circle of power, śakti-cakra. Sarvāmnāya Śākta Tāntrikas utilize multiple forms of Devī-particularly Bhuvaneśvarī, Dakṣiṇakālī, Kubjikā, Ugra Tāra, Guhyakālī, and Tripurasundarī-to construct a dyadic semiotics of power. In this essay I explore how the relationship between king and Kumārī catalyzes from the political center a complex matrix of mystico-political power rooted in a Nepalese form of Kaula Śākta tantra called Sarvāmnāya. ![]() And if you would like to contribute, you can also share your amateur videos for the Eporner community to appreciate.Published in: Pacific World-Journal of the Institute of Buddhist Studies, 3.6 (2004): 257-291.
